The Michigan beer film– Farmington, mi

February 25, "MI Beer Film" and Paw Paw Brewing with Rex Halfpenny

Join us for a special evening with Rex Halfpenny (MI Beer Guide), Trevor Klimek (Paw Paw Brewing) and Kevin Romeo (Director, MI Beer Film) for a special Paw Paw Brewing beer event along with a viewing of the "Michigan Beer Film".

The pre-movie event begins at John Cowley & Sons in downtown Farmington.  At the event, attendees will get tickets for Paw Paw beers to drink while Rex, Trevor, and Kevin discuss the Michigan beer industry and the film.  Paw Paw Brewing is a growing brewery from the village of Paw Paw, just west of Kalamazoo.  Although quite popular on the west side of our state, they are new to Southeast Michigan.  So this event is a great opportunity for people to get to know this beer and meet the brewer as it starts to get introduced to this region.  The "Michigan Beer Film" will follow at the historic Farmington Civic Theater.  The film provides an insight into the Michigan craft beer industry where you'll get a glimpse of the lives of brewers, hop farmers, and others that make their living in this craft.  The event will continue after the film back at Cowley’s with beer and more Q&A with Rex, Trevor, and Kevin.

6:00 – 7:30pm Pre-event at John Cowley & Sons

7:45 – 9:45pm “Michigan Beer Film” showing at Farmington Civic Theater

10:00pm Post-event back at John Cowley & Sons

Paw Paw Brewing Company and Trevor Klimek

Paw Paw Brewing Company was established in early 2010 by brother-in-laws Ben Fleckestein and Ryan Sylvester, placed in the small village of Paw Paw on the banks of the Paw Paw River surrounded by beautiful Wilderness. The idea behind Paw Paw Brewing Company was to create a place where the community could gather and connect with one another over a pint of locally hand crafted beer. In early December 2010 the door opened for business with four beers on tap, St. James English Mild, Black River Oatmeal Stout, Paw Paw Wheat and 2Paws IPA. Paw Paw Brewing Company’s grand opening celebration was January 21, 2011.

Over the course of the first two years Paw Paw Brewing Company became the community place it was intended to be. Many ingredients have gone into creating Paw Paw Brewing as it has become today but none more important than the community and the Paw Paw Brewing Company team.

Trevor Klimek has a profound passion for the art of fermentation! After graduating from Big Rapids High School he moved to Los Angeles, California where he joined the Young Americans performance organization teaching song and dance to children throughout the United States and abroad. In 2008 he graduated from Western Michigan University with a Vocal Music and Dance Arts Degree. While in college he developed his love for craft beer through home brewing which landed him a job at Bell’s General Store from 2005-2010 where he developed his brewing skills; eventually winning multiple home brewing awards. Trevor joined the Paw Paw Brewing Company’s Brew House Team in February 2011, and is now sharing his passion through great beer and education. Trevor is also an avid member of the Kalamazoo Libation Organization of Brewers (KLOB) and American Home Brewer’s Association, as well as a certified beer serving Cicerone.

The Michigan Beer Film

This project started out with a humble idea that we would produce a film for beer fans and movie fans alike.
Something that would celebrate the tremendous growth of the Michigan craft beer industry, but at the same time, take a serious look at some of the challenges that brewers face that accompanies this rapid growth.

The first stop on the map for us was Greenbush Brewing Co in Sawyer, Mi. From there, we simply went were the story naturally led. Along the way, we've traveled all around the state visiting Hop growers like Brian Tennis and Joel Mulder, Jeff and Bonnie Steinman; Brewers like Scott Sullivan, Ryan Sylvester, Eric Kuehhenn and Joe Short; Entrepreneurs like Ben Fleckenstein, Jill Sites, Stephen Roginson and tons more.

Rex Halfpenny

Rex Halfpenny is known throughout the beer industry, and nowhere more so than in the state of Michigan.  Rex has regular speaking engagements on a rotating monthly basis at different establishments talking about beer and educating people on beer and all of its aspects.  In addition to these standing events, he is invited to several special occasions to speak and share his experience and educate others.  He founded the Michigan Brewers Guild (the trade industry for Michigan brewers), helped legalize homebrewing in Michigan, and publishes The Michigan Beer Guide (monthly magazine dedicated to Michigan craft beer drinker).  He regularly sells out his monthly beer tasting talks at John Cowley & Sons in Farmington where the event will be held before and after the showing of The Michigan Beer Film.  Rex also plays a prominent role in the film.
